Why would God lead His people through 40 years in the wilderness? Through Deuteronomy 8, Jay Hohfeler explores how God uses seasons of suffering, uncertainty, and waiting to humble us, reveal what is in our hearts, and teach us to depend on Him. Discover how even the most difficult seasons can reveal Who God is and deepen our relationship with Him.
Why would God lead His people into the wilderness for 40 years when He could have taken them directly to the Promised Land?
In Part 1 of Stories from the Desert, The Debrief: Why the 40 Years?, Jay Hohfeler explores the purpose behind Israel’s wilderness journey and what those years reveal about Who God is and how He works in our lives.
Through the lens of Deuteronomy 8, Jay examines how God used the desert to humble His people, test their hearts, and teach them to depend on Him. What appeared to be a season of wandering was actually a time of intentional preparation, spiritual growth, and transformation.
Just as God worked through Israel’s 40 years in the wilderness, He continues to use seasons of suffering, uncertainty, disappointment, and waiting to reveal what is in our hearts and draw us into a deeper relationship with Him.
In this teaching, we explore:
Why God allowed Israel to spend 40 years in the wilderness.
How God uses difficult circumstances to humble us and reveal what is in our hearts.
The difference between simply enduring suffering and allowing God to transform us through it.
Why spiritual deserts can expose the false sources of security and significance we depend on.
How God's provision, discipline, and presence reveal His faithful character.
What Moses' journey teaches us about preparation, dependence, and trusting God's timing.
Why God's ultimate purpose is not simply to change our circumstances, but to deepen our relationship with Him.

Overview: What does the crossing of the Red Sea reveal about God's power and faithfulness? Through Exodus 13–14 and his personal journey through life-threatening illness, Jay Hohfeler explores how God rescues His people physically and spiritually. Discover how suffering can produce endurance, character, and hope, and how God's unfathomable love reaches us even in our most difficult circumstances.
What if the very circumstances you want God to rescue you from are also the circumstances He is using to transform you?
In Part 2 of Stories from the Desert, God’s Unfathomable Rescue, Jay Hohfeler explores the remarkable account of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt in Exodus 13–14 and what it reveals about Who God is and how He works in our lives.
Through his own experience with cancer, years of suffering, and an unexpected spiritual transformation, Jay shares how God’s rescue can reach far beyond our physical circumstances. While we often look to God for relief, provision, or a clear path forward, He may be accomplishing something much deeper in our hearts.
Just as God led the Israelites through the wilderness and parted the Red Sea, He continues to work in ways we may not immediately understand.
In this teaching, we explore:
Why God led Israel through the wilderness instead of the most direct route to Canaan.
How suffering can produce endurance, character, and hope.
The difference between physical rescue and spiritual transformation.
What the pillar of cloud and fire reveals about God's presence with His people.
Why God's guidance may look different from what we expect.
How the crossing of the Red Sea points us toward a deeper understanding of salvation through Christ.
Why we can trust God's character even when we cannot understand His plans.

A Reminder Worth Holding Onto
God does not simply rescue His people from their circumstances. He works through those circumstances to reveal Who He is, deepen their trust, and draw them closer to Himself.
Even when the path seems uncertain, His purposes are never without meaning.
