Why would God lead His people into the wilderness for 40 years when He could have taken them directly to the Promised Land?
In Part 1 of Stories from the Desert, The Debrief: Why the 40 Years?, Jay Hohfeler explores the purpose behind Israel’s wilderness journey and what those years reveal about Who God is and how He works in our lives.
Through the lens of Deuteronomy 8, Jay examines how God used the desert to humble His people, test their hearts, and teach them to depend on Him. What appeared to be a season of wandering was actually a time of intentional preparation, spiritual growth, and transformation.
Just as God worked through Israel’s 40 years in the wilderness, He continues to use seasons of suffering, uncertainty, disappointment, and waiting to reveal what is in our hearts and draw us into a deeper relationship with Him.
In this teaching, we explore:
Why God allowed Israel to spend 40 years in the wilderness.
How God uses difficult circumstances to humble us and reveal what is in our hearts.
The difference between simply enduring suffering and allowing God to transform us through it.

Overview: What does the crossing of the Red Sea reveal about God's power and faithfulness? Through Exodus 13–14 and his personal journey through life-threatening illness, Jay Hohfeler explores how God rescues His people physically and spiritually. Discover how suffering can produce endurance, character, and hope, and how God's unfathomable love reaches us even in our most difficult circumstances.
What if the very circumstances you want God to rescue you from are also the circumstances He is using to transform you?
In Part 2 of Stories from the Desert, God’s Unfathomable Rescue, Jay Hohfeler explores the remarkable account of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt in Exodus 13–14 and what it reveals about Who God is and how He works in our lives.
Through his own experience with cancer, years of suffering, and an unexpected spiritual transformation, Jay shares how God’s rescue can reach far beyond our physical circumstances. While we often look to God for relief, provision, or a clear path forward, He may be accomplishing something much deeper in our hearts.
